The University of Oklahoma has a rich history of supporting composition students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels of study. The OU Composition degree programs strive to help each student achieve the fullest development of their individual creative talents by providing a solid foundation in the basic principles of music: theory, musicianship, history and literature. Students will develop a working knowledge of composition techniques, including those related to technological innovations in the field, MIDI, electronic music, orchestration, notation, experimental music and conducting. Throughout their course of study, students will have access to OU School of Music ensembles and instrumental and vocal students, who regularly perform student compositions and offer reading sessions. Students also will benefit from the university’s leadership in music technology through which they will have access to a comprehensive collection of computers and electronic music equipment, including a state-of-the-art digital recording studio. Upon completion of the program, students will have begun to develop a personal voice in composition as they prepare for a professional career in music composition/theory or for advanced academic study. |
