Spencer H. Norton

The Norton Series celebrates the memory of composer, conductor and pianist Spencer H. Norton. He served the University of Oklahoma School of Music as a faculty member for 41 years and served as director of the school from 1947 to 1950. In 1960, he was appointed George Lynn Cross Research Professor, the highest research honor that faculty member may receive from the University of Oklahoma.

Among Norton’s major compositions is Te Deum, written for orchestra and chorus and commissioned in 1965 for the 75th anniversary of the university. Cibola, an earlier work for piano and orchestra, received national acclaim. It was inspired by the story of the Spanish explorer Coronado, who in the 16th century sought the Seven Cities of Cibola, a legendary land of treasure in North America. Other major works include his symphonic Dance Suite and Partita for Two Pianos and Orchestra, a 1960 work commissioned by the Ford Foundation. A native Oklahoman, Norton enrolled at age 15 in the University of Oklahoma, where he studied English, foreign languages and music. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa, he studied music theory and composition in Milan, Italy, for two years. A skilled performer and composer, Norton was widely known for his recitals on the harpsichord, clavichord, fortepiano and piano.
