An outstanding violinist with virtuosic brilliance, Gregory Lee made his debut winning the title of "Most Promising Violinist" at the age of 13 in the Victoria League Competition. Soon after, he won first prize at the Geelong Advertiser National Instrumental Competition. He was the winner of numerous competitions, including the Special Jury Commendation Award of Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Corpus Christi Competition, Dorcas McClean Competition and the Wenkart Orchestral Competition.
The Sydney-born violinist was accepted to study with the renowned pedagogue Dorothy DeLay in New York at the age of seventeen. Upon graduating from The Juilliard School, he received a fellowship to the University of Michigan, where he completed his Masters and Doctorate studies in violin performance with Professor Paul Kantor.
Dr. Lee has collaborated with conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, David Robertson, John Williams and Placido Domingo. An active member of the Rosseels Quartet, he took part in the Aspen Music Festival (as a fellowship recipient) and Schleswig-Hostein Orchestra in Germany. He has played for Jaime Lardo, Cho-Liang Lin, Igor Oistrakh, Ivry Gitlis and Oleh Krysa in master classes.
During his three years in Los Angeles, Lee was a regular member of the Pacific Symphony and Long Beach Symphony Orchestras. He has also worked with the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, California Symphony, San Francisco Symphony and Australian Chamber Orchestra. Dr. Lee recorded for many Hollywood motion pictures scores at 20th Century Fox, Sony/MGM, Warner Bros., Paramount and Capital Records.
As assistant professor of violin at Tunghai University of Taiwan from 2004 to 2007, Dr. Lee established himself as a highly sought after performer and teacher. In addition to frequent solo and chamber music performances around the island, he judged numerous national competitions and the National University Entrance auditions.
Gregory Lee's frequent solo performances include a recent joint performance of the Bach "Double" Violin Concerto with violinist Cho-Liang Lin and ABC's "Sunday Live" recital radio broadcast in Australia. He has performed concertos by Dvorak, Paganini, Wienjawski, Tchaikovsky and Bruch with various orchestras and gives regular recital tours in the United States, Asia and Australia.
"I endeavour to make a difference in my students' violin music education; helping them reach a higher level by solving problems, nurturing their talents and encouraging them to think independently so that they can realize their full potential. I also feel it is important to be involved in the community in order to foster enthusiasm in music. I enjoy frequent performance tours nationally and internationally, introducing our excellent School of Music to the world, hopefully drawing in quality prospective students."
Gregory Lee is currently assistant professor of violin at the University of Oklahoma and concertmaster for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra.
